Ngā Hau Māngere
McConnell Dowell was tasked by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency in late 2019 to replace the historic 105-year-old Māngere Bridge. By August 2022, a stunning new bridge connecting Onehunga and Māngere Bridge was completed on schedule.
Named Ngā Hau Māngere, or ‘gentle lazy winds,’ by local mana whenua, the bridge officially opened to the public on 27 August 2022.

Connecting Communities: The Evolution of Māngere Bridge
The Manukau Harbour has long been a crucial link between southern and northern settlements, from Māori waka portage to modern motorway bridges and the Old Māngere Bridge.
Legend tells of an early crossing with stepping stones used by local iwi at low tide to walk between Māngere and Onehunga. These stones are not visible today, likely buried under several feet of silt.
